Today’s must-read: Owner of Alameda restaurant shot dead in Oakland
Jesus “Chuy” Campos, owner of the the popular Webster Street eatery Otaez, was shot dead in an apparent robbery attempt near a restaurant he owns in Oakland, the Oakland Tribune is reporting this morning.
The Tribune’s Harry Harris reports that Campos was helping prepare breakfast service at his Oakland restaurant and that he was shot and killed in the service entrance there. He says Campos opened the Oakland restaurant in 1986 using back pay he won in a settlement with an employer. Campos opened Otaez on Webster Street in 2006.
“It was always Campos’ dream to have restaurant, not just for himself, but to build a business for his family,” Oakland City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente told the Tribune. “It was an unbelievable story. He went from nothing, not even speaking English, to owning a block. And for it to end this way is just not right. People don’t have any respect for human life. We have to get these people off the street.”
