Island Sports: Alameda Rugby update
Alameda Riptide defeat Elsie Allen, 71-5; boys lose to Oakland, 36-0
Under the lights of Raimondi Park on a chilly Friday night, the Alameda boys were unable to conquer the size and strength of the Oakland Warthogs. Though the boys played with heart and team spirit, injuries and sheer physicality on the part of the Warthogs downed Alameda. Alameda was also reeling from an early loss of their spark plug, Bajro Ponevic, who was hospitalized due to a concussion but thankfully released later that night. Forward and back of the match were not awarded due to some off-the-field issues. The boys will travel to Concord next week to play Diablo Rugby.
On the lighter side, the Alameda Riptide notched their second league win of the year, defeating the Elsie Allen Lobos, 71-5. Shaking off some of the dust from last weekend’s heartbreaking loss to nationally-ranked Mother Lode, the Riptide passed, rucked, and kicked their way to an easy victory in Santa Rosa. Elena Tran, Thais Arjo, and Rachel Fisi’iahi each scored one try, Catherine “CJ” Ignacio and Michelle Foketi scored two tries a piece, and lead scorer Kalila Patete scored an amazing four tries, good for 20 points. Kicker Caitlin Reid had a great outing, slotting eight out of 10 conversions, good for 16 points. Ashley Hom and Foketi were awarded with back of the game and forward of the game, respectively. The Riptide have a bye next week and the following week will play the fifth seed in the first round of playoffs.
