Firefighters quell Clement Avenue blaze

Alameda firefighters are seeking the cause of a blaze in a long-vacant building on the 2200 block of Clement Avenue.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said Alameda Fire Captain Doug Long, who acted as battalion chief on the fire. He said no one was in the building when the fire broke out, though there was evidence people had been living in the building.

Long said a Pacific Gas & Electric crew reported flames coming out of the windows of the building at 5:53 p.m. It took the 24 firefighters on duty 35 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Oakland fire crews manned Alameda’s stations while Alameda firefighters fought the blaze.

The derelict building is on property that’s part of the proposed 182-unit Boatworks development.
