Fire destroys houseboat in Alameda
A late morning fire destroyed an unoccupied houseboat docked in the Alameda-Oakland Estuary on Wednesday. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze, which created a column of smoke visible for several miles.
Acting Fire Chief Michael Fisher said the department was called shortly before noon about the fire, which he said appears to have started in the 35-foot houseboat’s cabin. He said firefighters were able to douse the one-alarm blaze in about 10 minutes.
Fisher said the fire destroyed the boat but didn’t damage any other property, which includes other boats that were docked in a line next to it. No one was injured in the blaze, he said. A Coast Guard boat was on scene after the fire was put out to investigate whether the fire leached any contaminants into the estuary, Fisher said.
