Alameda firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze at a home day care Thursday afternoon. No one was injured in the fire.

Alameda Fire Capt. Matt Tunney said they received a call about the fire at Marva’s Home Day Care on the 2400 block of Lincoln Avenue at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. He said a tenant and seven children were in the home when the fire started in an upstairs bedroom, but that everyone escaped uninjured.

Tunney said the one-alarm fire caused an estimated $85,000 worth of damage to the home and its contents. The Oakland Fire Department backed up Alameda’s stations while Alameda firefighters handled the blaze.

  • Mary Grace says:

The family is in immediate need of clothing, shoes and general personal care items (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc.)

Gift cards from Kohl’s, Avenue, Safeway, and CVS are also very helpful.

Donations are being accepted at Cliff’s Automotive, 2429 Lincoln Avenue @ Park Street. Clothing sizes and shoe sized needed:
    Misses size 12 shoe size 7 1/2
Girls size 8-10 shoe size 1Y (youth)
    Women’s size 24; shoe size 10 1/2

The family is looking for an affordable 3 three bedroom rental. Space for the day-care to continue to operate is also being sought.

  • Supervisor Wilma Chan says:

Marva Lyons has been a longtime care provider in Alameda and also a leading statewide advocate for childcare needs of families. She needs our help! She is looking for a temporary home and place to serve the approximately 8 Alameda families who have lost daycare because of fire. Anyone know of a temporary rental – two bedroom home? If so, please call my office on Monday 272-6693. Thanks.
