Word on Webster: Wheels on Webster

Columnist Steve Gerstle was walking on Webster Street one day when suddenly, there were wheels everywhere he looked – wheelchairs, bicycles, carts – some of them in surprising places. So he decided to do this photo essay.
The New Zealander has new owners. It will reopen in a few months as Croll’s Bar & Grill and feature live music and an affordable menu.
The “For Sale” signs are back up at the Fireside Lounge.
Cafe Jolie is scheduled to open at the corner of Webster and Santa Clara Avenue in late March or early April. It will have a coffee bar plus indoor and outdoor seating.
Chickens return. Mama’s Chicken Noodle House is scheduled to open soon at 1727 Webster Street, site of the former Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The Alameda Hair Salon at 1520 Webster Street is closed for remodeling and is planning to reopen in March. There was a fire in the building on February 4.
A miniature pig has been spotted in a Haight Avenue front yard. You are more likely to hear it before you see it.
