Student-organized Measure A forum Wednesday
A student-assembled forum on the Measure A school parcel tax is slated to be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria at Encinal High School, 210 Central Avenue. The forum is open to the public.
The two-hour forum was organized by Dylan Moore, an Alameda Community Learning Center junior, as a project for the Future Leaders Institute. Moore said speakers for and against the proposed tax are slated to participate.
“The goals of the forum are to disseminate information and provide an event where the community can voice its concerns. This parcel tax is important to the community and therefore it is crucial that you know the facts,” Moore wrote in an announcement about the forum.
The tax would charge property owners 32 cents per square foot of building they own, with a $299 cap for unimproved lots like parking lots and a $7,999 cap for everything else. Seniors and some disabled people could win exemptions from the seven-year tax, which would replace the district’s existing Measure A and Measure H taxes and raise an estimated $12 million a year for the school district. Election Day is March 8.
