Firefighters douse Verdi Street blaze
Alameda firefighters doused a one-alarm blaze Sunday night in the detached garage of a home on the 1500 block of Verdi Street. No one was injured, though the fire caused $40,000 worth of damage, a fire official said.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze, though they believe electrical issues may have started the fire, Alameda Fire Department Division Chief Ricci Zombeck said.
“We suspect it’s electrical, but it’s really under investigation at this point,” Zombeck said.
Zombeck said a neighbor called at 10:06 p.m. to report the fire, and he said the blaze was well underway when firefighters arrived. He said firefighters were initially concerned about ammunition stored in the garage, but that it was in the rear of the garage, which wasn’t affected by the fire.
He said the fire was out in about 20 minutes. It caused an estimated $35,000 in structural damage and $5,000 to the garage’s contents, Zombeck said.
