Webster water main break could tangle traffic
An early morning water main break on Webster Street could slow this evening’s commute. A spokesperson for the East Bay Municipal Utility District said crews are working to fix the leak, and that one of the southbound lanes of Webster Street coming onto the Island from the Webster Tube could be impacted.
Crews are working to fix a break in a 24-inch water transmission line near the corner of Webster Street and Ralph Appezzato Parkway, EBMUD spokeswoman Andrea Pook said. Pook said the break, which was reported at 5:30 a.m. and again at 9:30 a.m., caused some flooding this morning between the sidewalk and road that has since been cleared.
The mortar covered steel pipe that broke is about five feet underground, between the sidewalk and curb alongside a newly paved stretch of road. The cause of the break, which also caused a brief water shutoff at the nearby College of Alameda, is under investigation, Pook said.
