Friends and family are remembering Stacy Martinez as an unselfish person with an infectious laugh who was devoted to her children and who was active in supporting her childrens’ school and local youth sports leagues. Martinez, 46, died on January 10. A memorial has not yet been set.

“She just loved spending time with the kids, doing activities with the kids,” Martinez’s husband of 14 years, Manny, said Tuesday.

Martinez began dating his wife when the pair were high school freshmen in San Lorenzo. “All the kids used to walk one way, and I used to walk with her past her house,” he said.

The couple married and moved to Alameda 14 years ago. They have two children, Eric, 12, and Alex, 10.

A bookkeeper for Nob Hill Foods in Alameda, Stacy Martinez loved to go on vacations, her husband said. The family traveled to Texas, Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta.

Lily Moore met Martinez in high school, and she saw Martinez as “my sister from another mother.” She said Martinez, whose sense of humor and infectious laugh she will miss, cared for her children when she went back to work and provided her constant comfort when her parents died unexpectedly.

“She had this maternal way about her I just felt like I could always count on her,” Moore said. “Stacy was a ray of sunshine on your darkest day. The world is a little less bright without her now.”

Martinez was active in supporting several local youth sports leagues, shuttling children and providing snacks for teams in the Alameda Soccer Club, Alameda Little League and Alameda Girls Softball Association.

Birgitta Piamonte, a friend and neighbor to Martinez, said she helped out as team parent on the Little League team her husband coached and on the snack bar, and also served as an assistant coach for AGSA. Piamonte said she was also an active volunteer at Edison Elementary School.

“We miss her dearly. She was an amazing person,” Piamonte said.

A memorial fund has been set up for Martinez’s family; donations can be made at the Alameda Credit Union during open hours. Checks should be made out to “Stacy Martinez Memorial Fund,” and the account number 800255 should be written in the memo section of the check. Cash deposits should be made at the credit union, which is located at Alameda Towne Centre next to TJ Maxx. Donations can also be dropped off at Edison Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School.

In addition, websites have been set up to coordinate meals and other aid for the family and to allow friends and well-wishers to offer their memories and condolences.
