Island sports: U11 Islander boys take NorCal state cup
State Cup championship game: Alameda Islanders 2, UCSC Tecos Fire 0
From the opening kickoff, the U11 Islanders controlled their with the UCSC Tecos Fire, to capture the NorCal Premier State Cup championship and complete an undefeated 18-0-0 season.
Spearheaded by Jason Ravetti, Bryan Woo, Fahmi Ibrahim and Eduardo Franco, the suffocating Islander defense stifled and frustrated the Tecos Fire offense for the entire match. The few shots attempted were gobbled up by goalie Kyree Brown, who often initiated an Islander counterattack with a lead outlet pass to a midfielder.
With fiery effort, the Islanders out-hustled, outran and out-passed their opponents, creating numerous scoring opportunities for multiple players. Like a point guard setting up a teammate, Bryan Woo took a sideline throw in and fed Cameron Ba beautifully over the top, with Ba controlling the ball and blasting a shot into the back of the net, igniting a cheering explosion from the loyal and spirited Islander fan base.
Leading 1-0, the Islanders carried the momentum into the second half and continued their impassioned play of unrelenting defense and midfield ball control. Cameron Ba sealed the championship victory with arguably his most impressive goal of the season. As a Tecos Fire defender attempted to clear the ball, attacker Cameron Ba fully absorbed the point blank blast with his body, buckled but amazingly continued to play. While most peers would have crumpled to the ground, Ba regained his balance, controlled the ball and scored, before staggering to the sidelines in obvious pain. As the final whistle blew, the U11 Islanders celebrated their well-earned championship win.
In their first NorCal Premier season, coaches Griff Neal, Mbissane Ba and Paulo Altaffer guided the impressive U11 Islander team to a perfect 18-0-0 season, with a division title and a State Cup championship, outscoring opponents by a staggering 76-9 goal margin. The coaching staff wove a tight team chemistry and orchestrated a belief within each individual player that he made an important contribution to the collective team effort.
Throughout the 2010 season, the underlying foundation of the Islander team was the suffocating defense of Jason Ravetti, Fahmi Ibrahim, Bryan Woo, Cameron Spaulding and Kyree Brown, who recorded 12 shutouts. Controlling the middle of the field, Conor Neal quarterbacked the extraordinary platoon of Islander midfielders Eduardo Franco, Cooper Teare, Yosi Fetahi and the blazing speedsters Naseem Gaskin and Matthew Yep. Leading goal scorer Cameron Ba ushered the offensive attack, along with Luca Altaffer, pound for pound the toughest Islander player.
Congratulations to the U11 Alameda Islanders for an exciting 2010 season and for bringing home the NorCal Premier State Cup championship to the Island of Alameda.
