Council changing of the guard is Tuesday
Marie Gilmore will officially take on the mayoral mantle at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Gilmore will trade places with Beverly Johnson, who will take the last two years of Gilmore’s unexpired council term.
Rob Bonta will join Gilmore and Johnson on the dais as will Lena Tam, who won election in November to a second four-year term. Doug deHaan has two more years in his second term, while Frank Matarrese is termed out of his council seat.
Gilmore beat out deHaan, Matarrese, former Councilman Tony Daysog and Kenneth Kahn to win the November 2 mayoral contest, while Bonta was the top vote-getter in an eight-way City Council race with Tam and Johnson in a close finish for second and third.
Before the reorganization ceremony, the existing council will hold one last meeting Tuesday, where they are being asked to extend existing contracts between the city and its management, non-sworn police department and electrical workers unions through March 26, 2011 and to approve reports on redevelopment area traffic fees and the city’s redevelopment area finances.
The meetings get underway at 6:59 pm. Tuesday at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.
