Alameda courthouse to become family law center
Alameda’s George E. McDonald Hall of Justice is set to become a full-service family law courthouse, court officials announced Wednesday. They said the court’s current civil and traffic functions will move to courthouses in Oakland.
The Alameda courthouse will take on three family law courtrooms now based in Oakland, along with the family law clerk’s office and the Office of Custody Mediation Services, court officials announced. The move is slated to take place on January 18, 2011.
Court officials said the courthouse will also offer family law facilitators and an expanded presence from the Alameda County Department of Child Support Services, which will be moving to Alameda from the county administration building in January.
Alameda’s civil cases will be handled at the René C. Davidson Courthouse at 1225 Fallon Street in Oakland, while traffic cases are set to go to the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse at 661 Washington Street.
Court officials didn’t say why the changes were being made. They moved criminal cases out of the Shoreline Drive courthouse in 2009 in what they reportedly called a cost-cutting effort.
