Island Talkback: Tax rates, as requested

Following are the tax rates requested by Jeff Cambra via the post here last Thursday (“Island Talkback: Jeff Cambra on inching toward consensus”). Superintendent Kirsten Vital and I have had multiple meetings with business organizations over the past several months to discuss the school district’s education, financial and replacement parcel tax planning. As part of the district’s ongoing outreach to Alameda businesses, we met with Mr. Cambra and Alameda Business Alliance multiple times, including on October 22, and agreed to run scenarios that ABA was planning to develop. We have been awaiting their request. We are e-mailing this information directly to Mr. Cambra as well.

I look forward to continued public input as our community works to serve Alameda’s children and to support the schools we envision.

It is important to note that Mr. Cambra’s volunteer efforts this fall have been limited to discussions with a segment of the business community to attempt to craft a compromise with which ABA can be satisfied for the portion of the tax that will apply to the business community. Mr. Cambra has made clear on multiple occasions that ABA’s considerations do not seek to address what is a reasonable compromise for the overall tax, including the residential parcels that will pay the vast majority of the tax.

Although we welcome ABA’s feedback, the Board of Education is charged with putting on the ballot a parcel tax which represents a reasonable compromise for all of Alameda’s citizens, including individual homeowners.

Upcoming meetings are today, November 23, November 30 and December 14. The meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place in council chambers at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

We continue to reach out to all community members through this process and welcome feedback on all of the many important decisions which lay ahead.
