Island sports: Alameda Blaze update
Halloween Havoc Tournament
Fremont Sports Complex
October 23-24, 2010
Nor Cal Nitro 9, Alameda Blaze 5
With an impressive start to the first two fall season tournaments for the 10U Blaze team, the decision to enter the remaining two tournaments in the 13U division proved the Blaze to put a good fight. In the first game of pool play on October 23, the Blaze opened with a 3-3 tie in the first, with a three-run RBI by Victoria Avery. Pitching was outstanding by Lily Wilmot, who had an overall great game. The Blaze defense returned with multiple outfield catches by Alanna Norman and Mira Piamonte. The Blaze would score two more runs in the third, but not enough for the win.
Bombers 7, Alameda Blaze 6
The Blaze ended game two on October 23 with a close game, bringing in four runs in the bottom of the sixth. But it was not enough for the win. Ruby Siltanen and Lily Wilmot contributed with singles and a hard hit ball by Victoria Avery past third base drove in two RBIs. Outstanding defense by Bella Vick at short stop and Alexis Esparza kept numerous runs from scoring for the Bombers. Savannah Mesterhazy in left field added to the defense for the Blaze. A hard hit fly ball to Mira Piamonte in center, who then threw to Bella Vick at second, was the highlight double play of the game.
Pleasanton Phantom 1, Alameda Blaze 1
Game three of the pool play on October 23 against the Phantom was a pitching and defense duel to the end. Scoreless for both teams for five consecutive innings, was the result of multiple plays for each player on the Blaze defense, along with the pitching of Ruby Siltanen and catching of Isabella Sheel. The only run scored by the Blaze was Ruby Siltanen, who began with her hit past second. Bella Vick would then repeat it, with a line drive past second base to score Siltanen. Eileen Rhatigan contributed a hit towards short stop, but not enough to score. The game went into extra innings, but was called due to time and rain in the seventh. The Blaze would enter Sunday as the third place seed.
Oakland Bandits 3, Alameda Blaze 0
Entering into Sunday with single elimination games, the Blaze defense again was key in this game. The Blaze would get the bat on the ball numerous times by Mikayla Wong, Isabella Sheel and Bella Vick, but the Bandits defense would prevent the Blaze from scoring. Multiple hits by the Oakland Bandits to outfielders Alanna Norman, Mira Piamonte and Mikayla Wong, who all assisted, and a double play by short stop Bella Vick and third baseman Alexis Esparza were highlights. The Blaze team proved in this tournament that they are a tough fight against 13U teams. The Blaze would end the tournament, but proved they are ready for the last fall tournament, which was held on October 30-31 in Hayward, again in the 13U division.
