Island sports: Alameda Blaze 10U update
Monster Bash Classic
Hayward Sports Complex
October 30-31, 2010
Game 1: Alameda Blaze 8, Branham Hills Thunder Black 2
The 10U Blaze would play their last tournament of the season playing up in the 12U division, and they started out firing. Even with the below temperatures and rainy weather, the Blaze wanted the win. Lily Wilmot had an all around great game of pitching in game one on October 30, with three out of five innings scoreless. Second baseman Mira Piamonte had four defensive outs and a double play. Victoria Avery had a two-run RBI, and Mikayla Wong had a double of her own. Aggressive base running by Eileen Rhatigan brought in one of the runs. Singles by Alexis Esparza, Isabella Sheel and Elizabeth Avery kept the Thunder Black in the dark.
Game 2: Alameda Blaze 16, Phantom 3
Game two of the day was an all-around team effort by the Blaze. Offensively, the Blaze had seven runs each in the second and fifth innings, with five RBIs by Bella Vick and 2 RBIs by Savannah Mesterhazy. Defensively, the Blaze were amazing, with Ruby Siltanen’s pitching efforts of three scoreless innings and 10 defensive plays combined. Working behind the plate, Isabella Sheel kept numerous Phantom players from stealing. Victoria Avery, Alanna Norman and Mira Piamonte added singles.
Game 3: Salinas Storm 5, Alameda Blaze 0
A tough third game for the Blaze had multiple errors on the field, which were hard to recover from. The first inning started out strong for both teams defensively, with both scoreless. In the second inning, the Storm opened with a couple walks and very aggressive base running, which the Blaze tried to stop. A double then brought in two runs for Salinas and the third scored on a Blaze error. The Blaze players could get hits, but could not score from third base three times. A valiant effort, but no win. The Blaze would enter after pool play in the fourth seed of eight teams.
Phantom 4, Alameda Blaze 1
Entering into October 31 with single elimination games, the Blaze would face the Phantom again and this time, the Phantom’s fight was a hard match. Top pitching from both teams kept three scoreless innings for the Phantom with Ruby Siltanen’s pitching. Isabella Sheel was behind the plate for an attempted bunt was it was caught in the air for an out, and Lily Wilmot had a great catch at second, almost over her head. Numerous hits by Blaze players, but the Phantom’s defensive were on top. Blaze outfielders Alanna Norman, Mira Piamonte and Savannah Mesterhazy had multiple outs and first baseman Victoria Avery had a great double play in the third inning. Alexis Esparza at third and Bella Vick at short stop also assisted with multiple outs. The Blaze would not continue after the first game on Sunday, but had an overall great season, with three first place wins and one second place win. They were the only Alameda 10U Blaze team to date that played up in the 12U and 13U division during the fall season, with an all around fantastic season from May to October.
