Alameda Red Attack wins Manteca Tournament
The Alameda Red Attack won the rain-shortened Manteca “Edge of Darkness Tournament,” dominating their opponents by the scores of 8-0 and 9-0 as the pitching staff threw two collective no-hitters. Will Avellar took the mound in the first game and threw three stellar innings, striking out six Gilroy batters, before giving way to closer Francisco Pedraza, who pitched a perfect fourth inning, striking out the final batter. Devin Nash led the Attack at the plate, crushing a two-strike fastball to dead center in the first inning for an inside-the-park three-run homer, and ended an amazing tourney by going 5-for-5 with two homers, two doubles, and nine runs batted in. Avellar added to his fine day by going 4-for-5 with a booming double and three runs driven in.
Hunter Hennigh started game two, and simply overpowered a solid Silicon Valley squad in three hitless innings, striking out six; he also sparkled at the plate, going 4-for-6 and lining a pair of run-scoring singles on the day. Francisco Pedraza smoked a searing line drive over the center fielder for his fifth homer of the tourney season in the third inning, and took the mound again to close game two with a flourish, striking out the side with a howling fastball to wrap up the Red Attack’s second consecutive no-hitter, and earning Alameda first place tournament honors in the 12U division.
