Halloween haunted house contest is back!
A group of Alameda residents (and Halloween enthusiasts) is looking to boo-tify your neighborhood this Halloween by getting you involved in their annual Haunt Your House! decorating contest. You could win two-round trip tickets on Frontier Airlines.
The deadline for entries is noon on Monday, October 25, and the judging (and people’s choice competition) begins on Tuesday. And this year, contest organizers are pairing with the Alameda Food Bank to do a food drive for the competition. Contestants will be asked to donate 10 items to the food bank as their entry fee, and also to put out Halloween-themed donation boxes for collection.
“This Island has so many neat Victorian homes that are just begging to be decorated for Halloween. We can creepify our old houses while helping those in need, so enter the contest, decorate your house, and have some fun,” said Daniel Neumansky, a contest organizer and self-described veteran house haunter.
The contest was started in 2006 by Patti Cary, who grew up on the corner of San Jose and Grand waiting not-so-patiently each year for her favorite holiday to roll around.
Entrants are asked to e-mail their name, address and name of entry to firstname.lastname@example.org. Judges will be looking at the exterior of entrants’ homes and will be placing their votes based on originality of theme, construction and haunt factor (“invoking a spooky, spine tingling chill for all those who see it!”).
Awards will include prizes for best newcomer and for best youth entry 12 and under, and they’ll have a people’s choice award as well (you can check out there blog for that one).
