The Oakland Tribune’s Katy Murphy reports that state legislators have signed a bill that will expedite the distribution of $1.2 billion in federal funds that school districts can use to hire teachers and bring back school days cut from district calendars. Preliminary estimates show that Alameda could be in line for $1.81 million, Murphy reports.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom met with Oracle’s Larry Ellison on Thursday to discuss the city’s America’s Cup proposal, The San Francisco Chronicle reports. City officials and sailing enthusiasts here in Alameda have supported San Francisco’s efforts to bring the competition to the Bay Area, in the hope that the Island will reap economic benefits from the race.
