Walk to promote organ donor awareness is Saturday

Before Michael Corbitt’s daughter, Delaney, was born in 1994, Corbitt and his wife received some terrible news: Their baby had developed a condition in utero that had destroyed her kidneys. After nearly three years on an organ donor list, the family was fortunate enough to find a donor.

Ever since then, Corbitt has worked to ensure others have the same opportunities his family had by raising awareness about the need for organ donors through a group he created called Organ-Ize the Planet. And the group is seeking participants in its second annual Donate Life walk over the Golden Gate Bridge this coming Saturday, August 28.

“The goal of our nonprofit is to raise the public awareness on the desperate need for organ donation and get people to register to be organ donors. We also try to financially assist transplant families in need,” Corbitt said.

Registration for the 3.4-mile walk, which takes place from 11 a.m. to  p.m. Saturday, costs just $20, and you can register online. Proceeds from this year’s walk will benefit Aaron Tanner, a 5-year-old Brentwood boy who received a long-awaited heart and kidney transplant on August 14.

Organi-Ize the Planet has a permit allowing them to bring up to 100 walkers over the Golden Gate Bridge. Registration for the event is open through Thursday, August 26. (You can also learn how to register to be an organ donor by clicking the Organ-Ize the Planet link up top.)

The walk is being done in conjunction with the California Transplant Donor Network.
