School district seeks participants for surplus property committee
School district leaders are looking for help in determining what to do with the old Island High School site and Tidelands property it owns on Buena Vista Avenue, neither of which are being used by the district right now for its programs. So they’re setting up an advisory committee and are looking for interested people to join.
The committee’s job will be to determine whether the properties are surplus and if so, what priorities should be established for their future use. The district is required by state law to set it up in advance of selling, leasing or renting its property.
The district needs to gather between seven and 11 members for the committee who represent a cross-section of the community and who offer a broad spectrum of expertise in environmental impact, contracts, building codes, land use planning and more.
Anyone interested in sitting on the advisory committee can call Kathleen Brooks at 337-7060 for an application and more information, or they can pull it off the district’s website. The application deadline is September 6.
The Board of Education is expected to approve the committee membership on September 14, and the first of its six scheduled meetings is slated for September 29. Recommendations will be due to the board on January 25, 2011.
The former Island High site is at 2437 Eagle Avenue, and the Tidelands property is at 1525-1535 Buena Vista Avenue, near Littlejohn Park.
