City swim champs start Friday

Alameda’s 56th annual City Swim Championships will be held Friday through Sunday at Emma Hood Swim Center, 2256 Alameda Avenue. Spectator admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

The events, for swimmers ages six and up, include master’s division events Friday and additional youth events Saturday and Sunday. The races begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and a snack bar will be available.

The event will close with an award ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday where five special awards will be distributed: The Emma Hood Award, for the most outstanding person enrolled in the Aquatic Volunteer/Basic Lifesaving Program; the Ernest Poggi Award, for the most outstanding student in the Lifeguard Training Course; the Frank Weeden Trophy, for the most outstanding boy or girl age-group swimmer in Alameda; and the Lance Seely Award and the Sally Gallagher Award, which go to the most outstanding male and female high school swimmers.

The competition is co-sponsored by the Alameda Recreation and Park Department and the Ala-Gator and Alameda Island Aquatics swim teams. For more information, call ARPD at 747-7529.
