Rick Murray, Lizzy Reynolds, John Beery, Ron Desmond, Deborah Wright, Kelly Desmond, Zane Johnson, Bill Sonneman, Morgan Hashimoto, Billy Oyas and Jessica Cavalli prepare for Saturday's "fun-raiser."

Pirates in Paradise is a fundraiser for the Alameda Education Foundation to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 21 on the Mariner Square waterfront (the event’s official address is at the Pasta Pelican, 2455 Mariner Square Drive).

Suggested donation for the event is $10 for adults, $5 for children, an amount that covers entry in the event’s boat regatta. (Though you could always give more.)

The event – which began as an effort to introduce people to Alameda’s waterfront but became an effort to help Alameda schools – includes kayaking, canoeing, rowing, whale boating, dragon boating and more. The Alameda Police Department and Alameda Fire Department will “paddle it out” during a boat regatta, and participants can also watch Jack London Aquatic Center’s exhibition crew race.

The John Beery organization will offer boat rides, and AAA Premier Scuba will offer scuba basics at the Cardinal Point pool.

The festivities will also include live music by Retroz, art from the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, food from the Pasta Pelican, entertainment from Hoop Party and a raffle, with prizes that include Margaret Fago prints and a 16-foot Hobie Cat.

Event sponsors include John Beery Yachts, the Pasta Pelican, Wright Way Insurance and others. More information is available on the Alameda Education Foundation’s website or by calling Deborah Wright at 908-3939.

Let’s hope that the AFD-versus-APD competition remains friendly and safe: we have already lost too many staffers from both departments to budget cuts to lose any more to a friendly competition”–no matter how good the cause! :-)
