Island sports: Alameda Storm take District 4 championship
The Alameda Storm AA Little League team won the California District 4 Tournament of Champions on June 23 in Concord, defeating Lafayette, 21-8, to take the championship.
The team of 8-to-10-year-olds defeated Antioch, 3-0, on June 21 to advance to the championship game. They advanced in the tournament by beating North Oakland, 6-3, on June 16 and Martinez, 11-0, on June 18.
The Storm, one of 10 AA teams in Alameda and 150 from the 16 cities in District 4, lost their first league game but went on to win 17 games in a row to finish in first place at the close of the regular season. The Storm then took their local championship game, winning the right to represent Alameda in the Tournament of Champions.
The team is managed by Randy Marmor and coached by Steph Turner, Hardeep Mahl, and Mike Anders.
“It’s always great to win a championship. But more important is the way the kids came together as a team throughout the season,” Marmor said. “You expect the gifted athletes to improve and excel. But one of our major strengths was the contributions from kids who had minimal skills in February when we started practicing but by the end of the season were playing at a level far above what anyone could have imagined. That’s the real joy of coaching kids.”
The team’s roster includes Josh Anders, Beck Anderson, Jake Avellar, Sam Currid, Shane Hernandez, Josh Hui, Sandeep Mahl, Alejandro Mora, Aeneas Pardo, Nick Phoumivong, Lassel Rose Jr., Dean Sarmiento, Julian Sayen and Max Turner.
