Alameda’s first-ever Green Home Expo is coming to Alameda Towne Centre this Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature more than 50 exhibitors offering environmentally friendly products and services plus advice on how to live a greener life.

The event will also include a dozen speakers, kids’ activities with Mad Science and a raffle for a mini folding electric bike. Admission is free.

The event is the brainchild of Alameda Association of Realtors president Rob Platt and board members Diane Richmond and Victor Jin, who see green building and design as the wave of the future, said Donna Smyth, who is helping to organize the event.

“Clients are starting to come to Realtors looking for homes with green features,” Smyth said.

The expo will feature a host of contractors, landscape designers and architects, plus vendors who sell organic food and plants, children’s toys and clothing and furniture. And it will host speakers who will talk about green building and home restoration, reducing dependence on plastics and lowering energy costs.

Featured speakers will include Miss Alameda Jessica Robinson, who will talk about leading a green lifestyle; Sun’s Free Solar’s Kevin Good; Mayor Beverly Johnson; and Alameda Towne Centre’s Michael Corbett.

Towne Centre, of course, is at the corner of Park and Otis. More information on the expo is available online. Sponsors are The Solar Company, the City of Alameda, Alameda Towne Centre, the Alameda Association of Realtors, Bank of Alameda, Alameda Municipal Power, Fast Imaging, PlaceLogic and ecohome Improvement.
