Hundreds of Alamedans took in the sun, surf – and yes, sand – this past Saturday when they dropped by Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach for the 44th annual Sand Castle & Sand Sculpture Contest.

Some 470 people from Alameda and beyond submitted 100 entries for the contest, with Alameda’s Biodiesel Pelicans for Measure E earning Best in Show honors in the sand castle competition and the Briggance-Deramian families, also of Alameda, winning Best in Show for the sand sculpture contest.

“We’ve been waiting 10 years for this!” a member of the Briggance-Deramian team exclaimed on claiming their prize.

Other winners are listed below. And photos are in the right column, under Island Pix.

The event is co-sponsored by the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, the Bayview Women’s Club and the East Bay Regional Park District. This year’s judges were Board of Education Trustee Mike McMahon; Jeff Wilson from East Bay Parks; park commissioners Lola Brown and Sandy Bertero; local artist Jan O’Hare; and public art commissioner Eric Ibsen.
