Alameda police are looking for the person or people who, they said, broke into the Alameda Animal Shelter early this morning and took a “dangerous” dog destined to be euthanized today.

Police said that sometime between 4:30 a.m. and 7:21 a.m., someone cut through a cyclone fence to gain entry to the perimeter of the shelter, which is on Fortmann Way, then used bolt cutters to cut the lock of a kennel. They then crawled through and took Max, a 70-pound, three-year-old, red-colored male pit bull.

Police said the dog had been deemed dangerous by the Alameda County Superior Court on Tuesday and that it was scheduled to be euthanized this afternoon after bite incidents on January 22 and March 10.

They are asking anyone with information on the dog’s whereabouts to contact them immediately. The department’s phone number is 337-8340, and the case is being handled by the department’s investigations division.
