Fruit, chocolate and Mints

Whole bunch of stuff on the local business front to tell you about …

First up: The long-awaited Fruits & Chocolate café is opening up at Alameda Towne Centre this coming Saturday, May 22. And they’re offering half off everything but drinks in the shop, which is in the interior of the mall (they’re next to Beverly’s), on opening day, with smaller discounts May 23-28. They’ll be open 11:30 a.m. to midnight May 22.

The café’s owners say they’re looking to solve the problem of people not eating enough fruit – by dipping it all in chocolate. The family-owned café will also offer a selection of “Asian fusion” treats, shaved ice and select beverages.

One other new Towne Centre tenant: the Alameda Chamber of Commerce. They’re moving out of their digs on Park Avenue and into a space at the shopping center that will include a visitors center, one of the things the Chamber promised to provide as part of its deal to get money from the city.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Towne Centre family. Towne Centre has a steady stream of activities, which leads to opportunities for members to promote their businesses as well as visibility to people strolling (through),” Melody Marr,  the chamber’s chief executive officer, was quoted as saying in a release.

A grand opening of the new office is planned for early June.

Around the bend on Park Street, Mints – the cute little flower shop next to Tomatina – is shutting its doors. A note on the door from Mints’ owners says they’re jettisoning their retail operation in order to concentrate on their wedding and event business. You can find out more about what they’re up to (and check out a host of other super-cute stuff they’ve found) on their website. Meanwhile, it looks like a new, teen clothing boutique will be filling their space.

Up the block from Mints, the folks at Urban Forest have also hung a “store closing” sign, though they, too, are making a move (their second since their Webster Street days). According to their Facebook page, they’ll take their framing operation and “a tiny bit of gift items” to a new space, at 2434 Webb Avenue. Look for them to open in mid-June. In the meantime, we hear that Aphrodite’s Closet will move into the Park Street space.

And last but not least, looks like there’s a new kebab place going in across the way from the Alameda Theatre & Cineplex. Not sure when they’ll open (they have T-shirts in the window, but no website or Facebook page), so if you know anything, feel free to post below.
