Breezy and firm course conditions lead to solid scores at the 83rd Alameda Commuters Golf Tournament.

With firm fast conditions, along with a slight westward wind, scores were a bit higher than usual in the Commuters tournament. From the starting field of 224 players, who teed off over 36 holes on the Fry and Clark courses this past weekend, only 36 rounds were posted with under par scores.

After 36 holes, former Cal golfer and current San Francisco City champion George Grandanata of Emeryville and Scott Olds of Oakhurst led the field heading into the final rounds, which will be played on April 24-25 at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex. Both players stand on top of the leader board, firing a 5 under par 137.

Other notable players within striking distance include Moreau High School senior sophomore Carlos Briones, with a 4 under par 138; four-time Alameda Commuters champion Rick Reinsberg, at 2 under par 140; and 2009 defending champion Travis Taylor, at 1 under par, 141.

The Commuters caught up to 1987 and 1990 winner Ken Webb of Turlock, who said, ”If there is one tournament I will always play in, it will be the Alameda Commuters!” Ken fired rounds of 77-76/153 and missed the cut.

Of the 224 players, the cut line for next weekend’s finals was a two-round score of 146. Only the low 50 scores and ties make the cut. Reaching the final weekend in the Commuters is one of the toughest cuts to make and a true testament to the quality of players each year. PGA professional Jack Cummings, who heads the committee that sets up both courses for true championship golf, estimated that 146 would be that number after first round action.

With tucked pins over bunkers, along with the firm and breezy conditions, players were tested early and often throughout all 36 holes. With this low cut score, only 9 strokes separate the leaders from the entire field.

Alameda’s players included:

Richard Schact: 147
Patrick Byrne: 148
Matt Hettich: 154
Tommy Nakano: 157
Shawn Shelby: 159
Ron Williams: 164
Chris Goin: 164
David Willams: 168

Alameda High School student and 2010 San Francisco City womens champion Samantha Esquerra was one for four women golfers to play this championship. These talented ladies play from the same championship tees as the men. Samantha fired 81-77/158.

Also, playing were Jenni Jenq, who shot a 163; Jordan Ontiveros, who shot 159; and Tiffany Lim of San Jose, who shot the low score of 153, including a 73 on the Earl Fry course, making hers the best score any woman has shot in the Commuters. Her score of 153 also beat out half the field.

Play resumes April 24, with players teeing off at 7:20 a.m.

The public is welcome to come and experience one of Northern California’s premiere amateur golf events, right here in ALAMEDA! And more information is available on the Commuters website.
