Today’s must-read: AJ on possible hate crime outside Ruby Bridges school
The Alameda Journal’s Peter Hegarty has reported that Alameda Police are investigating a possible hate crime incident Monday morning outside Ruby Bridges Elementary School.
Alameda Police told Hegarty that an Hispanic man in his 30s was facing a possible hate crime charge after he allegedly told an African American woman she could be “hanging from a tree” after she told him he should clean up after his dog when it pooped on the school lawn. The man also reportedly hurled racial epithets at the woman.
Police said the man also allegedly left a message containing an additional derogatory comment about African Americans on the school’s answering machine. They didn’t release additional information about the suspect or the victims. The district attorney’s office was to review the incident for possible charging, Hegarty reported.
The school, Hegarty reported, is named after the first African American girl to attend an all-white elementary school in the South.
