Citing “family and personal reasons,” former city councilman Hadi Monsef has dropped his bid for mayor. Monsef announced his decision to quit the race in a letter to the Alameda Sun this week.

Monsef, a real estate broker, announced his plans to run at a December 8, 2009 Alameda Rotary meeting.

“For family and personal reasons, I am withdrawing my initial intent to run for Mayor in the November 2010 election,” Monsef wrote in a letter in which Monsef thanked his supporters. “I know that I have disappointed many but I beg everyone’s understanding.”

Sitting council members Marie Gilmore and Frank Matarrese are in the race, as is former councilman Tony Daysog.
