Preschoolers study Africa
Students at The Child Unique Montessori School spent January getting ready for African American History Month by engaging in a month-long study of African heritage. The students wrapped up their studies with a week-long celebration, including this (pictured) January 27 event.

Dowdell wins Kiwanis service award
Local Kiwanian and supervolunteer Dawna Dowdell is the winner of the 2009-2010 Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award for California, Nevada and Hawaii. The award was presented to Dowdell in a January ceremony in Vallejo for service to her local Kiwanis club and to the community.
Dowdell joined the local Kiwanis club in 1999 and serves as its immediate past president. She most recently was a member of the successful 11th Annual Alameda Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off and BBQ Dinner committee and will be co-chairing the May Alameda Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast.
