Your weekend: Autobody goes solo
Folks are getting back into the swing of things after a nice, long holiday, and the Island’s art galleries are no exception. This week brings a couple of openings, including Autobody Fine Art’s first solo show, which features the work of Hayward artist Matt Ritchie, aka Matt136. The show opens this Friday, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
The show will feature 300 of the artist’s works, including a mural made especially for Autobody’s intimate loft space. Also included are “minutely detailed drawings that elicit Renaissance comparisons with Durer and Michelangelo (and) brightly colored assemblages that carry complicated meaning within their formal arrangement,” the folks at Autobody say. And they’ll feature recurring objects and characters that include a plump little rat, the artist himself and Michael Jackson.
The artist’s media include old vinyl records which are sawn into landscapes and ballpoint pen and paper, and the work, the Autobody folks say, addresses a host of complicated personal and social issues.
Admission to the show, which is open through February 7, is free. Autobody is at 1517 Park Street, and their phone number is 865-2608. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Oh, and if I’m not mistaken, Estuary Art Attack is this Friday. If you’re interested, click the link for more info on participating galleries.
