On Point: The Letter

Submitted by on 1, January 21, 2010 – 5:50 am5 Comments

Hey folks, I just wanted to check in to let you know I’ve secured a copy of the letter the city got with SunCal’s alternate development plan last week. (The city’s not releasing the rest of it right now; long story.) Anyway, I’ve scarcely had the time to formulate a thought on this but given the fact that we’re all voting on it, I wanted to get it to you ASAP. Enjoy!

In the interest of journalism and transparency and providing the public with information so as to be fully engaged in the discussions on Alameda Point development, your publication of SunCal’s cover letter is a public service.

But I respectfully disagree with your statement, “given the fact that we’re all voting on it.” Perhaps your statement was made in haste. Nevertheless, voters cannot possibly be expected to factor into their voting decision this optional entitlement application. Even if a voter were to believe that this is the fix to the initiative that would address the opponents’ concerns, passage of Measure B will not guarantee that this option will be exercised on SunCal’s part following the election. The ENA provision that allows for this backup plan, does not require that this option be exercised should the initiative pass.

This optional entitlement provision was inserted into the ENA, in my opinion, to allow the developer to continue to pursue other options if the initiative failed. Few people, if any, expected in 2008 that the election would happen later than Nov. ’09. As events turned out, their option date was about a month early.

If voters think this optional entitlement application (what they will see of it) is a great idea for Alameda, then show up at the February ARRA meeting. I disagree that this has any bearing on how a voter should cast their vote on February 2.

    • Richard,

Thanks for your comment. I think every scrap of information related to Measure B could influence Alamedans’ vote on it, and am presenting the letter in an informational context – not to make an argument for or against the ballot initiative. (You’ll get that next week.)

The City Clerk’s office and the Planning & Building Department, and the library now have everything in SunCal’s new submittal–except Attachment or Appendix N, which remains confidential–available to review:

    1) Hard copies are available at the Planning & Building Department and the Main Library for review for free.

    2) The City Clerk’s office can photocopy all or part of the entire publicly-available document (some 480 pages) for 10 cents a page. (Probably under $50 for everything, or about $25 if double-sided copying is used.)

    3) Buy a CD with the entire (public) document on it for $5 from the City Clerk.

    4) Bring in a USB memory stick and download the entire public document (about 150 MB) at no charge.

This info is straight from City Clerk Lara Weisiger in a phone conversation about 5 minutes ago.

No downloading of the document from the City’s Web site is available. (Ask Lara about this if you want to.)

If it is to be all marinas, bike paths, recreational fields, and open space, plus light industry, we won’t need a new library, or schools. Transit hub will also be optional. I say lets go for it. Vote No on Measure B and lets do it ourselves with what we want.

Add in a VA hospital, a low-rise hotel or two for the families of the patients and others, the necessary shops and lunch places and I’m sold.
