Hoop shoot finals are Friday
The 37th Annual Elks Hoop Shoot City Finals is this Friday, January 8 at the Alameda Point Gym, 1101 West Redline Avenue. The event begins at 6 p.m.
The event gives local hoopsters a chance to compete among 3 million youths ages 8 to 13 nationwide for the Elks’ free throw champ title. Friday’s contest will feature the winners of earlier competitions at the Island’s parks split into their respective age groups, and the victors will represent the city and the local Elks lodge in a district competition in San Mateo the weekend of January 16.
Park contestants had 25 chances to shoot free throws, with the top three contestants in each age group moving on to represent their park at Friday’s city final, which will be played by more than 120 kids. Ultimately, six national champions will be chosen, and their names inscribed at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The contest is put on by the Alameda Recreation and Park Department and sponsored locally by the Alameda Elks Lodge #1015. It began in 1946 as a local competition in Corvallis, Ore. and became a national contest in 1971. The Elks put on the event to highlight their commitment to youth.
