Welcome to Shop Alameda, our special, weekly holiday advertising column designed to give you the 411 on where to find local holiday gifts, deals, meals, fun and more. When you shop locally, it helps us keep all those cute little shops we love – and helps pay for services like public safety, parks and more. (And it sure beats getting on the 880.) So without further ado …
First off, we’ve got a couple of deals to tell you about over on Park Street. Alameda Bicycle is giving away $70 in free goodies with each adult bike purchase: A front light, rear light and U-lock. Or get a kiddie bike with 12″ or 16″ wheels, and you get to trade it in for the next size up when you are ready, and receive full purchase price trade! Alameda Bicycle is at 1522 Park Street, and their phone number is 522-0070. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Over at Blue Rectangle, they’ve got a whole host of unique gift items, including one-of-a-kind blank journals made from recycled covers of cool old books that offer a great way to reuse parts of books when the pages are beyond usable condition, but the covers are still amazing. Other items for sale include DVDs from as low as $1.82 in the store’s 17′ tall rocket (great stocking stuffers!), vinyl records recycled into bowls and CD holders and vintage clothes. Blue Rectangle is at 1355 Park Street (near Central), and their phone number is 337-0750. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Santa Claus is putting in some appearances around the Island. In fact, you can come take your photo with Santa at Alameda Towne Centre at his custom house, in the interior mall. Santa’ll be there from now until Christmas Eve, and here’s a bonus, parents: You can collect Earning 4 Learning double points with your photo purchase. For more detailed information on hours, click here for Towne Centre’s website. Alameda Towne Centre is at the corner of Park Street and Otis Drive, and their phone number is 521-1515.
Santa will also be making a visit to the West Alameda Farmers’ Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. He’ll be handing out goodies and taking free pictures with children of all ages. The Farmers’ Market is on Haight Avenue at Webster Street in West Alameda and is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays as well as 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays.
And last but not least, here are two little plugs for The Island. First up a note to readers to remind you that we offer the opportunity to support the work we’re doing by subscribing. Subscriptions are just $25 a year, and you can subscribe by clicking the “Buy Now” button in the box to the right of the screen. And as an added incentive, we’ll give half the money we earn on subscriptions this month to local charities.
And secondly, a note to businesses: The Island offers a cheap, effective way to reach customers here on The Island. To place a display ad – or to be included in our weekly Shop Alameda column, which will run through the holidays – contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 910-7785.
