UPDATED POLICE INVESTIGATE HOMICIDE
Police are investigating the death of a woman found by a neighbor in her home on the 500 block of Corpus Christi Road as a homicide.
Police identified the woman as Tonya Avery Foti, 47.
Police said a neighbor found the fully clothed woman dead on her bed and called them at 8:39 a.m. Friday. They said they found no obvious signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. But the Alameda County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy Monday and determined the cause of death was homicide by strangulation.
Alameda Police Lt. Bill Scott said police don’t yet have a suspect and that they are conducting interviews. He said that nothing appeared to have been taken from Foti’s Alameda Point home.
Police said that Foti lived alone and that she often left the door and windows of the two-bedroom cottage she lived in unlocked and open.
Foti’s is the fourth homicide in Alameda this year. Her death comes on the heels of the killing of Darin Gregory Vinall, 40, who lived on the 100 block of Parfait Lane on Bay Farm Island and was found dead by police on December 2. Police are still investigating that crime.
