150px-united_states_department_of_veterans_affairs_veterans_day_2009_posterI think you know the deal. Remember the folks who served our country in wartime. (And that all federal and state offices, banks, etc are closed.)

History of the holiday here. And if you’re looking for a local event to attend, here’s the scoop on the USS Hornet, which is out at Alameda Point:

American veterans will be honored during a public ceremony on the historic aircraft carrier on Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, November 11, beginning at 11 a.m. The aircraft carrier USS Hornet is the Bay Area’s largest veteran.

The guest speaker will be Randall J. Ramian, Chief Executive Officer of the USS Hornet Museum. A commander, Supply Corps, in the Naval Reserve, Ramian has held numerous leadership positions in the U.S. Navy including commanding and executive officer. He was recalled to active duty in 2004 – 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and served as deputy commander/chief of staff of a transportation group at a major Kuwaiti port with distribution responsibilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE and Djibouti.

Music will be provided by the USS Hornet Band. The Color Guard will be provided by Boy Scouts Troop 152 and Adventure Scouts Unit 152 from Oakley who are led by a former crewmember of the USS Hornet.

The Hornet, by the way, is offering free admission to vets all week.
