Magical Island home hosts holiday trunk show
“I live here in Alameda on a sweet little plot of land surrounded by trees,” Laurie Wagner said of her Powers Court home. “It’s a magical, fairy-filled place.”
That magic has inspired Wagner, a writer, and her husband, Mark, a photographer, to gather groups for regular art and literary events they call Wagner Family Fires. The events that have taken place over the last few years have included day-long writing classes with nationally known writers, house concerts and an array of story telling events, Wagner said.
This Sunday, November 15 they’re hosting their annual Holiday Trunk Show, featuring the work of artisans from Alameda, Berkeley and Oakland.
“Everything is hand made, the prices are good and we open our doors to the people of Alameda to join us and get a little holiday on,” Wagner said.
The items for sale include jewelry, ceramics, clothes, woven items and more. The sale will take place inside the Wagners’ house; in the yard, they’ll have couches ringing a big bonfire, Wagner said.
“Even if people only want to stop by and have a glass of wine and sit around the outdoor fire we welcome them. It’s really more like a party,” she said.
In addition to giving folks a haven from the outside world, Wagner said the event also offers recession-weary Island residents a break from highway traffic and high prices.
“There are alternatives here at home,” she said.
The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and the Wagners’ place is at 27 Powers Court.
