Your weekend: Surf the Hora
Alameda Towne Centre wraps its Summer Serenade concert series tonight with the (strictly Kosher!) surf sounds of Meshugga Beach Party.
The free, two-hour show starts at 5:30 p.m. in the mall’s center court.
Meshugga Beach Party is the brainchild of local yokel Mel Waldorf, a surf music enthusiast who cooked up the idea for the band in 2003 after overindulging in a host of seder goodies and one too many glasses of Manischewitz. The group’s songs are a meld of traditional Jewish songs and the surf sound.
The group, which includes Danny Snyder on guitar, Stuart Brandt on drums, Karen Dobronyi on keyboard and Steve Bacon III on bass, just released its third album, “Let’s Go Shlepping!” (And if you’re looking for a preview of Thursday’s show, check out this video of the group performing “Hava Nagila/Misirlou,” which they say has gotten more than 100,000 hits.
While you’re there, you can enter a drawing to win a $500 shopping spree at the Centre. The drawing will be held Saturday, during their final Encore Saturdays concert with Cuban artist Fito Reinoso. That 75-minute show is at 6 p.m. and it, too, is free.
Towne Centre, of course, is at the corner of Park and Otis.
