Today’s must read: Pete!
Progressive Alamedan blogger Dan Wood has penned a post saying that our Congressional rep, Pete Stark, could have some unwelcome company at his planned town hall meeting at noon this Saturday at City Hall, which will cover, among other things, the thorny subject of health care.
Several of the federal legislator-led town halls have escalated into shouting matches that have led to violence and arrests, and legislators who have held them have faced gun-toting constituents and death threats.
Stark, who is the head of the House Ways and Means Committee on health care and has long been a champion of heath care reform, has a reputation for being, shall we say, a bit acerbic (so I’d guess he’ll be able to hold his own). According to this Wall Street Journal piece, he once called a fellow legislator “a whore for the insurance industry,” and he has also generated headlines for cussing out constituents who don’t agree with his views.
According to folks who are seeking to organize pro-reformers, Stark will officially hold a town meeting on the President’s health care plan at noon on Saturday, September 12 at Alameda City Hall, which is at 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.
