We’ve got a happy ending to the lost pet story we ran a few weeks ago about a Cockapoo named Ella: She’s been found.
Ella’s owner, Gina Giachetti, checked in to let us know that she found Ella on Saturday night. “She’s in pretty good shape for 18 days on the run!” Giachetti wrote.
It sounds like Giachetti is about as devoted a dog owner as you’ll find: According to her personal blog, she got up at 6 a.m. every day to drive to Alameda and spent four hours a day searching for Ella, who ran off during a July 29 play date at a friend’s house. Giachetti regularly posted fliers, checked in diligently with local animal control officers and even searched the Island herself in an effort to find her lost pet.
But on Saturday afternoon, she got a call from a local resident – one of several she’s received – who thought Ella had wandered into his house as he cooked dinner the night before. Giachetti found Ella in the same block. Here’s her description of what happened:
Two doors down from the sighting, I called. I heard a very familiar bark, but there have been a lot of those. I called again, and it seemed like the dog I heard was in a house three doors down from the sighting. I looked up at the window, and out of the corner of my eye to the left, I saw her run out of the backyard. Ella.
By the way, Oakland Tribune columnist Dave Newhouse did a really beautiful piece on Giachetti and Ella (and there’s a follow-up on the way).
