The site’s called CityLab, and it has everything from census basics to crime stats to the number of veterinarians and garment manufacturers in town (though I can already see a few details that they’re not quite clear on: The site says we only have one newspaper, and don’t even get me started on that zero medical marijuana dispensary thing).
They may still be working out some kinks (like the American Community Survey data the site relies on, which in my experience is not always so accurate), but the site’s not without its charms. Who doesn’t want to know that 0.47 percent of the Island’s registered voters are Libertarians, or that 8 percent of us don’t have a car? (Good thing, ‘coz there’s only one car wash in town, and they’re probably going to close.)
And if you’re really looking to nerd out, you can compare Alameda to other cities, or check out their running display of totally random facts (did you know that San Leandro has two gun ranges? Crazy!).
Or check out our nifty “Patchwork Nation” classification through PBS’s “Online NewsHour” site. They classify us as “Emptying Nests” because Island residents’ average age is 40.6. Apparently, they didn’t know that the average age of a kindergarten parent here is like 42.
