Central Cinema owner may head to Oakland

We have to confess, we’ve been out of town for the last several days, so we’re just catching up to this item in the East Bay Express about former Central Cinema owner Mark Haskett. Apparently, Haskett is in the running to take over Oakland’s Parkway Theater.

Haskett had said he was looking for a new location outside of Alameda shortly before Central Cinema shut down, in June 2008, following a rent dispute with the landlord and what Haskett said were problems getting movies when the (much bigger) Alameda Theatre came to town.

The Parkway – home of the famous “baby brigade” movie showings and, interestingly enough, an inspiration for Central Cinema – shut down in March, the Express’s Nate Seltenrich reports, and he says its owners have already turned away one suitor. Seltenrich reports that Haskett has had a “productive discussion” with Oakland City Councilwoman Pat Kernighan but hasn’t yet met with the theater’s owners.

We’ll keep you posted.

  • Jeff R. Thomason says:

That was a great little theater. The couches were a bit funky, but it was a great spot to bring your kid.

  • Jon Spangler says:

As a friend of Mark's and a loyal if infrequent customer of Central Cinema, I hope that Mark is successful in finding a new venue. The Parkway sounds ideal for him, at least on the surface, with an existing and loyal customer base that is used to what mark would probably offer.

    I wish him well…
