Webster Street celebration is Thursday

13After a tough string of losses (including Tillie’s, which is apparently closed permanently, and the 76 gas station), Webster Street has got some openings to celebrate, at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, July 2.

They’ll start by dedicating a new mural on the side of Garden Cleaners, which is at 1529 Webster. The floral mural was designed by artist Rachel Gingold and was created with the help of the city’s facade assistance project.

After the dedication, you can stop in for a sneak peek and refreshments at Wescafe, Miguel and Monica Trejo’s soon-to-be-opened eatery at 1536 Webster. I hear they’ve got a newly renovated courtyard out back. When they open, they’ll serve coffee drinks, sandwiches and salads.

Last but not least, for diving enthusiasts, there’s AAA Premiere Scuba, 1517 Webster. They’ve got everything you need to meet your undersea diving needs, marine-themed gifts and more.

And oh by the way, there’s a new Curves at 1701 Webster too.

The event is sponsored by the city’s Development Services Department and the West Alameda Business Association. For more information, call 749-5834 or 523-5955.

Both of our downtown business districts have suffered in this recession–remember the now-empty auto row on Park Street? If, as some economists predict, the economic recovery does not kick in for good until 2011, I wonder how many more local businesses or homeowners will become victims?
