Today’s must-read: AJ on Crosstown closing

crosstown-coffeehouseI had planned to do a piece next week about the pending closure of Crosstown Coffeehouse and Community Center, next Friday, July 24. But the folks at the Alameda Journal beat me to the punch.

Sounds like the nonprofit spot was unable to resolve a long-running dispute with their landlord over who would pay renovation and other costs. The coffeehouse had also done a series of fundraisers to try to cover their costs (money was stolen from one, as I reported earlier).

Members of Crosstown’s board of directors said they’re hoping the closure is only temporary and that they will be able to reopen at another spot. In the meantime, they’re planning to continue the sing-a-longs, community meetings and other activities they’ve become famous for in their three years on the corner of Encinal and High.

The Journal hasn’t posted the story online, so you’ll have to check their front page to read it (the head of Crosstown’s board of directors has got a letter to the editor in too). In the meantime, I have a profile I wrote as part of a piece on coffeehouses earlier this year, and it looks like their Facebook page is still active, too.

Does the landlord really think there will be a better tenant after the coffee house closes? We have a surplus of commercial real estate on the market right now.
