Island sports: 10U Blaze wins Pleasant Hill tournament
10U Blaze took an initial loss to the Livermore Smoke, 5-2, in the opening game on Saturday. A line drive hit by Sarah Mahler drove in the second run in the top of the second inning but the team could not keep the momentum to score again.
Alameda then defeated the Petaluma Steel Breeze 14-3 in game two. Petaluma was no match for the Blaze defense, which had a line drive stop by Lily Wilmot and throw to Julia Boyden at short stop for the first out. Alanna Reyes, behind the plate, caught two pop-ups for the second and third outs in the first. Alameda scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning with singles from Vivienne Saulovich, Anekaila Crevani, Alanna Reyes and Ruby Siltanen. Meida Tautalatasi led off the third inning with another hard hit single and later scored off a line drive past second by Julia Boyden.
In game three on Saturday, Alameda defeated the San Ramon Stompers, 7-2. The first run was scored in the bottom of the third by Meida Tautalatasi and then Lily Wilmot was hit by a pitch to advance her to first. The final run was scored by Julia Boyden in the bottom of the fifth. The team ended Saturday with a third place seed going into Sunday’s games.
Alameda faced the Stompers again in game one on Sunday, defeating them 4-1. A fantastic line drive right past first base by Victoria Avery allowed Ruby Siltanen to score. The only run scored by the Stompers was in the first inning, with all 11 batters struck out during the game by Anekalia Crevani’s pitching.
Advancing to the semi-finals, Alameda faced the Livermore Smoke again. The Blaze broke out with the hitting in the first inning with runs scored by Edyn Garvisch, Alanna Reyes, Julia Boyden, Vivienne Saulovich and Meida Tautalatasi to bring in the first five runs. The final runs scored were by Reyes and Tautalatasi. The Smoke scored two runs but could not contend with Crevani’s pitching, which again brought seven strikeouts.
Advancing to the championship game in 100 degree heat against the Santa Clara Sparks, the Blaze started off with a walk by Saulovich to first in the bottom of the first inning. A fly out by Boyden advanced Saulovich to third. Mira Piamonte came in as the pinch runner for Crevani who hit a single to drive Saulovich in for the first run. Piamonte, coming in again for Reyes, singled in the bottom of the second was able to score off her two stolen bases to advance to third. Piamonte then was driven in to score off Grace Oransky’s line drive to the pitcher. The Blaze defeated the Sparks in the top of the seventh inning with a line drive hit to Wilmot with a throw to Edyn Garvisch at first base. Crevani had 30 strikeouts in Sunday’s combined three games. The Blaze defeated the sparks 7-0 to win the championship.
The 10U Blaze will continue with their sixth tournament of the season, which takes place in Santa Clara from July 24-26.
