apcwheelboys2lx8qaeprdbg8nprfvnk2csr80jf0796The folks out at the Alameda Point Collaborative have been working overtime to raise funds this year. Their latest efforts include a collaboration with the Alameda Natural Grocery.

Grocery owner Donna Layburn said she was inspired to work with the collaborative after attending its annual Portraits of Success breakfast, which features some of the folks who have been helped by the collaborative’s programs.

“APC’s focus on health, nutrition, outdoor activity, and sustainability through their community enterprises was a natural fit for us,” Layburn said.

As part of the four-month fundraising and awareness campaign, the grocery will solicit donations, sponsor raffles and host other events each week. The campaign will feature one of the collaborative’s services each month; this month, it’s the Cycles of Change bike shop.

It all begins Friday with the opening of “Bicycles Transformed,” an art show featuring bicycle frames salvaged and hand-painted by youths aged 5 to 20. The show, which will be displayed in the store’s produce section through July 31, opens with a reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday (and I hear there will be free popcorn, helmet fittings, a bicycle safety quiz and a raffle for a free helmet).

Keep an eye on our Happenings listings for upcoming events.
