Today’s must read: Lauren Do on Mary Kenney

In case you missed it Friday, blogger Lauren Do did a really nice piece on Mary Kenney, who succumbed to cancer last Monday, June 22. She was 76.

Kenney, according to this bio on the website for Alameda’s Fourth of July Parade – for which she was to serve as a grand marshal – had a half-century of work as a volunteer for just about every nonprofit organization in Alameda. At the time of her death, she was serving as president of the Alameda Welfare Council and as a board member of the Alameda Library Foundation.

The Journal’s Peter Hegarty also wrote a nice piece, and that’s here. (Hegarty says Kenney’s family will likely represent her in Saturday’s parade.) Kenney’s online guest book is accessible here.

A memorial will take place for Kenney from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Encinal Yacht Club, 1251 Pacific Marina. Remembrances can also be made in Kenney’s memory to the Alameda Free Library Foundation, P.O. Box 365, Alameda, Calif. 94501; Alameda Welfare Council, P.O. Box 2265, Alameda, Calif. 94501; American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73123-1718; and Girls Inc. of the Island City, 1724 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda, Calif. 94501.
