I just got a note from Felicia Hsieh at the USS Hornet about their upcoming Splashdown event, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the United States putting the first men on the moon. The guest of honor, she says, is Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon.
Aldrin’s July 25 visit will be a homecoming of sorts: The Hornet was the primary recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space missions. It’ll also be his first Bay Area stop on a tour to promote his new book, “Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon.”
It’s part of a four-day event that includes a host of special exhibits (real moon rocks!), space-oriented activities like model rocket building, demonstrations of robotics technology, model Mars rovers and much more.
Stay tuned for more information closer to the event. In the meantime, the Apollo’s recovery story is here.
